GUIDELINES FOR GENERAL BEHAVIOR
Brazilians are not as strict about time as Americans. It is normal and not considered to be rude for people to arrive late to a meeting or event. There is very little emphasis on what an event should end and it can be considered rude to set an ending time for an event or meeting. Your dress attire and outward appearance are very important in Brazil, casual dress may be more formal than an American is used to.
Casual topics of conversation revolve around sports (especially futbol, or as Americans know it, soccer), entertainment, and leisure activities. Discussing politics, religion, and deforestation should be avoided as they are topics of conflicting opinions. When invited to someone's home for an event, it is customary to bring a gift. Gifts of good chocolate or liquors are generally acceptable. When extending an invitation to another for a dinner or event, it is expected that the dinner should take place in your home or at a fine dining restaurant. It is unacceptable to ask guests to bring food or drink to a party. When eating, always use utensils, never touch food with your hands.
